I love my Mac’s menubar. It’s a great place for little, background apps to live. I’m going to share with you some of my favourite menubar apps.
From right to left, I have:
- The built-in analogue clock. I have no need for the precision of the digital clock, and the analogue clock takes up less space.
- Wi-Fi. I use my MacBook Pro on the go quite a lot, so quick access to Wi-Fi settings is a must.
- Battery. This reminds me to plug my MacBook Pro into power when I’m at home.
- Time Machine. The best backup software I’ve ever used - set and forget!
- Dropbox. I’m an avid Dropbox user. I share folders with family, friends and people I’m working for. I use MacDropAny to sync my Desktop, Photos and Music folders with Dropbox, too.
- MailTab for Gmail. I use Gmail in my web browser, so I need to be notified when I get a new email.
- MenuTab for Facebook. Likewise, I like to know when I get a Facebook message, request, or notification.
- Google Drive. Ideally I’d like to be able to hide this, but it’s build in such a way that Broomstick can’t hide it.
I then have two apps which I have hidden using Broomstick:
- Caffeine, which prevents my Mac from sleeping when I don’t want it to. Useful when I’ve got a textbook onscreen and I’m doing maths exercises, or when reading a long news article. I use my Caffeine Manager Alfred extension to toggle it on and off.
- F.lux, which changes the colour of my Mac’s display to adapt to the time of day, making it warm at night and like sunlight during the day.
